We’ve had a crazy winter so far haven’t we? I thought this would be a perfect time to remind everyone not to put their sunscreen away! I know when temperatures dip and the sun sets early we can make the mistake of not practicing sun protection. Winter brings plenty of UV rays that cause fine lines, wrinkles, discoloration, and skin cancer. Did you know 80% of the UV light still comes through the clouds? If you are out playing in the snow, hitting the slopes, snowshoeing, or just taking a wintery walk, you can double the amount of harmful rays you receive simply due to reflection. The higher the altitude the higher the intensity of the UV rays. Fortunately, there are simple ways of protecting ourselves from the sun’s effects in winter. Start with a daily routine of SPF 30-50 no matter what time of year and apply to exposed areas to prevent cumulative sun damage.
There are a whole plethora of products available such as moisturizers, makeup, BB creams and even products for men with SPF that make it easy to apply. Some of the products we carry in office are:
Apply sunscreen 30 minutes before you go outside. Reapply every two hours, more often if it is snowing or you’re sweating. Carry a small tube of sunscreen and SPF lip balm with you. Ski masks, goggles, wraparound glasses, helmets, and hats are invaluable. It’s best to go out early and pop indoors for lunch to give your skin a break and reapply sunscreen. Protecting your skin is a year-round commitment, but most importantly go outside and have fun!!
