sunscreens

This could not be more true as it applies to having healthy, beautiful skin.  Much of my day in clinic is spent helping educate my patients in ways they can improve the look of their skin.  What I think can help patients most is prevention measures.  Sun protection with an appropriate SPF not only significantly reduces the chance of developing skin cancer, but can reduce wrinkles and sun spots as time passes.  There are also topical creams that prevent wrinkles which can easily be applied nightly.  Patients frequently come in to have wrinkles and sun spots treated, but coming in to discuss prevention measures and talk about proper sunscreens can prevent the frequency and numbers of these unpopular skin  problems.

I believe one easy prevention measure is using a moisturizer with SPF built into it.  This simplifies your morning regimen and is quite effective at blocking UV rays all year.  Cloud cover does not block all UV rays.  Another  simple, but very effective measure is applying a small amount of tretinoin (Retin-A) cream or gel nightly to the face.  This can significantly prevent small wrinkles around the eyes, mouth and forehead.  You can often find these products available for purchase at your dermatologist’s office for added convenience.

Ask your dermatology provider about these and other preventive treatments at your next skin check.
