microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion is a great treatment option and one of my favorites! During microdermabrasion treatments a gentle stream of crystals and suction lift away dead skin cells that cause your skin to look dull. After your first microdermabrasion your skin is fresh and glowing.

Some additional benefits to a microdermabrasion are improved product absorption and collagen stimulation. Removing the outer layer of dead skin allows the active ingredients in your products to penetrate and work better, as well as trigger your skin to produce new, healthy cells over time.

Microdermabrasion treatments are great for most skin types and for anyone wanting brighter looking skin. These treatments can be done anytime of the year, with no downtime being required. I recommend people with active acne and/or moderate to severe rosacea to avoid microdermabrasion, as it can make these conditions worse.

If you are thinking about trying an at home microdermabrasion kit or device please consider this:

Microdermabrasion is meant to be carried out by a trained and licensed person using medical grade diamonds and or aluminum chloride crystals. You want the highest quality materials available, not only for safety, but also to maximize effectiveness. You are not going to find medical grade quality in any device that you can buy over the counter.

The same goes for creams and at-home treatments such as chemical peels.  Although you can find great over the counter products at a variety of different price points, please be aware of over promising and under delivering products.

In general the quality of ingredients are not going to be as high when purchasing from the drug store. However quality can increase as you go up to department store, spa, medical spa and then finally, your dermatologist’s office.

There are hundreds and thousands of creams, treatments and devices on the market. Not only are there a lot you can buy over the counter or at a department store, but there are also hundreds that are only available in doctors offices.

How do you decide what is appropriate to buy over the counter and what is best to get from your doctor? Ask your dermatologist! It’s our job to know what’s good and what’s not, we do our research and know your history so it helps us make informed recommendations. Always remember that what works for you or a friend may not work for someone else.
