Skincare Tips for Staying Ahead of Summer Heat

From bonfires to beach nights, summer is filled with outdoor fun. The only downside is the effect that the sun and the hot, humid air can have on your skin!

The good news is that it’s easier than you might think to keep your skin fresh and hydrated during the summer months. Here are just a few summer skin care tips for preventing damage, maintaining elasticity, and looking like a million bucks in your bikini!

1. Use Sunscreen

This might sound like a no-brainer, but sunscreen is absolutely critical to skin health. Ideally, you’d be using it all year long, but it’s especially important in the summer months when the sun is stronger. Look for brands that offer protection from UVA and UVB rays, and make sure that its SPF is high enough for your needs. You can also look for water-resistant or “makeup-proof” brands if you’re worried about sweat.

2. Pay Extra Attention to Your Pores

Some people mistakenly think that the sun will dry out their pores. In fact, the opposite is true: Pores can enlarge during sun exposure to make it easier for the skin to “breathe” in the heat. This means that blackheads and breakouts are more likely than ever! Keep an eye on your pores whenever you’re going through your skincare routine, and take action right away if you notice any extra blemishes or oiliness.

3. Don’t Overuse Cleansers and Moisturizers

Between sweat and sunscreen, you might be tempted to overuse your skincare products in the summer months. Resist the urge! If the bottle only says 1-2 times a day, keep that as your limit. Your skin won’t get any cleaner with more frequent washing; it’ll just get irritated from your non-stop rubbing and scrubbing. Additionally, some moisturizers are only meant to be used in small, concentrated doses, so slathering them on can result in burns, breakouts, rashes, redness, and more.

4. Switch to Gel-Based Skincare Products

Try to avoid thick creams and heavy lotions in the summer months. Not only can they feel unpleasantly greasy on your skin, but they can also trap sweat and dirt under their heavy layers. Invest in gel-based skin care products instead. They’ll feel lighter and fresher, and since they’re moisture-based, they won’t melt off in the heat.

5. Drink More Water

This isn’t skincare that you can buy, but it’s the most useful advice that you’ll ever receive in terms of keeping your skin young and fresh. Water is basically the nectar of the gods for your skin. It hydrates; it flushes out toxins; it keeps things supple and elastic. Some studies even suggest that it can play a role in preventing scars, wrinkles, and other imperfections on the skin. Long story short: Drink more water!
