What is Laser Hair Removal?

Laser Hair removal works to selectively damage hair follicles by transforming light energy into heat.  Since the light emitted by the laser selectively targets the follicle, damage to the surrounding skin is minimized.

Because of the hair growth cycles, we schedule several laser hair removal treatments, spaced 4-8 weeks apart to achieve optimum results.  Often times patients will have “touch-ups” yearly or more or less frequently depending on individual hair growth.  Laser hair removal is proven to reduce terminal hair growth by 75-90%.

Due to the wide variety of skin and hair colors, patients must be evaluated prior to laser hair removal treatment so that a treatment plan can be designed to produce maximum results.

Many hair and skin types can be treated although patients with dark, coarse hair and light skin tone respond best to the laser.

What are my Treatment Options?

We have three different devices at Seattle Skin and Laser to remove unwanted hair:

  • Light Sheer is typically used for facial hair or smaller areas such as natural bikini and underarms.
  • Palomar IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) is used for larger areas as well as patients with darker skin types.
  • Yag Revlite can be used in multiple areas but is typically used for facial hair or on darker skin types

Side effects are minimal and include swelling, welts and redness, and a hot or warm sensation for 1-4 hours post-treatment.

Results and Recovery

In general, laser hair removal involves little to no downtime. The area(s) you had treated may be red or sensitive shortly after treatment; however, this tends to fade quickly. Over the next couple weeks and with subsequent treatments, you should notice less hair growing in and eventually all hair growth should be eliminated after completing a treatment series.

Frequently Asked Questions About Laser Hair Removal

How much does laser hair removal cost?

The cost of a laser hair removal package depends on factors like the size of the treatment area, the number of treatments needed, and the type of laser used. During your consultation with our technicians, you’ll receive a full estimate of your costs.

How long does laser hair removal last?

Since laser hair removal treats each follicle at most growth stages, laser hair removal is considered permanent. However, it’s possible to still see the growth that is thinner and lighter in the treated areas, making it easier to remove.

How effective is laser hair removal?

Laser hair removal can drastically reduce the growth of hair in the treated area, making for easier removal with shaving, plucking, or waxing. Most patients see long-term results with a full package of treatments.

What can you not do after laser hair removal?

After laser hair removal, you should avoid direct sun exposure, lotions that contain fragrances, tanning lotions, or body scrubs or other exfoliating treatments. If you received laser hair removal in the underarms, do not apply deodorant until side effects subside.

How many sessions are needed for laser hair removal?

The number of sessions required to complete laser hair removal will vary for each patient. On average, you can expect between six and eight sessions.

How long does it take to lose hair after laser hair removal?

Hair typically begins to fall out about 5-14 days after a laser hair removal session.

Is it OK to shave after laser hair removal?

You can shave after laser hair removal, but should wait several days after a session before attempting to do so.

Is laser hair removal permanent?

Laser hair removal does not guarantee permanent results, but they should be long-lasting. Any hair that regrows is typically much shorter, finer, and lighter in color.

Is laser hair removal painful?

Laser hair removal should be minimally painful at most. The treatment is generally considered less painful than hair removal treatments such as waxing.
