What is Kybella®?
Kybella® is an injectable treatment that can eliminate excess submental fullness, also known as a double chin. It is made up of a synthetic form of deoxycholic acid, a naturally occurring molecule in our bodies that helps to break down and absorb excess fat cells. Kybella® is FDA approved as a nonsurgical solution to eliminate moderate to severe submental fullness.
During treatment, Kybella® will be injected into multiple areas of the double chin using a fine needle. Most patients will need to receive a series of 2-3 injections spaced about a month apart to see optimal results.
Who is a Candidate?
If you are tired of living with a stubborn double chin that cannot be eliminated with diet and exercise, Kybella® may be right for you. Kybella is meant for patients 18 years of age or older who are in good general health and who are not pregnant or breastfeeding. A consultation with one of our dermatologists can help to determine if this treatment option is right for you.
Recovery and Results
Because Kybella® is a nonsurgical treatment, there is no downtime required. Patients may experience some swelling, bruising, or numbness under the chin which will resolve with time. Patients who receive Kybella® injections do not usually need any further treatment to correct their double chin.
How long do Kybella results last?
Because Kybella removes fat cells from the body, results are permanent. Kybella does not prevent future weight gain, however, so it’s best to maintain a healthy and active lifestyle.
How soon do you see results from Kybella?
It can take 4-6 weeks for Kybella to begin producing results. Subsequent injections can enhance these results, and our team will give you an estimate of how many injections are needed for your ideal results.
What does Kybella feel like?
Kybella injections are administered using a topical anesthetic, so you won’t feel anything. Afterward, you may experience some soreness and sensitivity in the area.
Who is a good candidate for Kybella?
Good candidates for Kybella are patients who have stubborn fat under their chin but are otherwise at a healthy and stable weight. If you have poor chin definition because of stubborn fat rather than loose skin, Kybella may be a good option.
Can Kybella be used on other areas?
Kybella is indicated for submental fat, or stubborn fat under the chin. Using Kybella in another area would be considered off-label.
Are Kybella injections painful?
Kybella may produce some soreness and sensitivity in the days and weeks after your session, but the injection process itself should not be painful. We’ll supply a topical numbing cream for your comfort.
Can fat come back after Kybella?
It’s possible for fat to expand in other areas, but Kybella removes the fat cells underneath the chin completely meaning they can no longer expand if you gain weight.
Can I lay down after Kybella?
You should avoid laying down after your treatment and make sure to sleep in an elevated position. This helps manage swelling for the first 2-3 days.
Can you drink alcohol after Kybella?
You should avoid drinking alcohol for at least 24 hours after your session. Alcohol can impact your circulation and worsen swelling.
Does Kybella work for belly fat?
Kybella is not indicated for belly fat. Kybella is FDA-approved for submental fat, and this would be considered an off-label use.
