Acne is a skin condition that involves clogged pores causing inflamed pimples, and deeper cysts. Acne can be on the face, neck, chest, back, shoulders and upper arms. Although acne is most common for teenagers it can also affect adults at all ages. Acne can clear up on its own without treatment but some cases can be severe last months or years.  For many with moderate to severe acne scarring can leave permanent marks and pitting.

Acne is caused when a pore in our skin is clogged. A clog usually begins with dead skin cells sticking together inside the pore. Typically dead skin cells rise to the service and the body sheds the cells without problem. Sometimes our body makes too much sebum, an oil that keeps our skin from drying. It becomes the binding agent for these dead skin cells.

A clogged pore is a perfect place for bacteria to grow and multiply quickly. This is when the pore can becomes red and swollen and takes on a ‘pimple’ appearance. The inflamed pore can be deep enough to cause an acne cyst or nodule.

There are many medications and treatment options available for patients suffering with acne.

Acne can be controlled with a variety of treatment options. Therapies include topical and oral medications, laser procedures and home prevention.

For patients with mild acne we usually begin treatment with topical products. Products containing benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid often clear the skin without the need of a prescription medication. At home treatment requires a commitment but can help prevent future outbreaks.

If you have a lot of acne, cysts or nodules you might need to discuss prescription medications and additional therapies with a dermatologis

Acne Extraction or Acne ‘Surgery’

Acne Surgery is a medical term used for acne extraction which is the manual removal of the “stuff” that clogs our pores. Extractions of blackheads, whiteheads, milia and pustules on a consistent basis can be a beneficial addition to your acne treatment regimen. In our practice, we recommend acne extractions to teens and adults who have mild to moderate acne. We find that with treatments about 2-4 weeks apart our patients have clearer skin and a noticeable reduction in pore size. Acne surgery alone and/or in combination with other acne treatments can help to maintain healthy acne free skin for a long period of time.
